Algarve football round-up: Lucky strike!

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: FARENSE 1-0 ESTORIL

LIGA PORTUGAL MEU SUPER: LEIXÕES 3-0 PORTIMONENSE

Farense coach Tozé Marreco celebrated his home debut on the bench with a last-gasp first win of the season over visiting Estoril last Sunday afternoon.

The opening half saw Cláudio Falcão and Elves Baldé hit the woodwork for the Algarveans either side of Estoril’s Yanis Begraoui smashing a penalty, awarded for an Artur Jorge trip, against the crossbar.

There was then a decided lack of goalmouth action following the interval until the very end of the encounter when keeper Ricardo Velho, who received his first Portugal call-up for the upcoming internationals against Poland (Saturday) and Scotland (Tuesday), twice denied Kevin Boma ahead of central defender Raul Silva hitting the 95th-minute winner with virtually the last kick of the match.

Farense will return to action at Liga 3 side Sanjoanense, just south of Porto, on October 20 for a Portuguese FA Cup third round tie.

Meanwhile, new Portimonense manager Ricardo Pessoa must be wondering what has gone wrong since the beginning of his tenure just over a month ago when his side thrashed Marítimo 5-1. They have failed to win a league match since, again going down tamely at Leixões on Saturday evening.

Simão opened the scoring directly from a corner for the hosts after 10 minutes, two more strikes in quick succession from Ricardo Valente and Paulo Alves making it three without reply before half time. Leixões were happy to sit on their lead thereafter as the second half trickled away uneventfully.

Portimonense, now languishing in the bottom three of the second division table, welcome Benfica B next Monday evening whilst having been handed a plum FA Cup home tie against champions Sporting the following Friday night, October 18 (8.15pm kick-off, live on Sport TV).
