Algarve football round-up: Ups and downs

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: FARENSE 1-0 ESTRELA AMADORA

LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: PORTIMONENSE 1-2 CHAVES

Last Friday evening, Farense finally managed a home win against fellow strugglers Estrela Amadora. The visitors gave the ball away 20 minutes into the match and were duly punished as Marco Matias set up Poveda to strike home what turned out to be the winner.

In the second half, keeper Ricardo Velho produced two stunning saves to hold on to all three points. Although still joint last in the league table alongside Arouca, only two points now separate the bottom seven clubs and one of them, Boavista, provide the opposition away this Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the last 16 FA Cup tie with Benfica has been re-scheduled for January 14 due to a fixture clash and will be played at Farense’s São Luis home ground rather than the Stadium of the Algarve.

One division lower, Portimonense suffered yet another home defeat last Saturday afternoon. A defensive mix-up handed Chaves an 11th-minute lead through Paul Ayongo, but the score was soon level when the visitors’ Bruno Rodrigues headed into his own net following a corner.

Goalkeeper Vinicius then kept manager Ricardo Pessoa’s men in the game with a brace of outstanding saves and Tamble could have given the Algarveans the lead but for his 84th-minute goal-bound header rebounding from the crossbar. Instead, an acrobatic Jo Batista overhead kick only moments later ended the home side’s hopes of gaining at least a point. Portimonense, now second from bottom, next play Paços Ferreira, two points above them, away on Sunday morning.
