The new railway bridge between Chelas and Barreiro will reduce travel time between the capital and the Algarve and increase the frequency of connections.
The government has announced a series of public projects to address the needs arising from constructing the new Lisbon Luís de Camões airport in Alcochete.
One consists of a railway bridge between Chelas and Barreiro, the third crossing of the Tagus. This bridge will reduce train travel time to the Algarve by 30 minutes. Additionally, it will enhance the frequency of trains between the Algarve and Lisbon by improving access to the capital.
Cristóvão Norte, deputy and President of the PSD Algarve, emphasizes that “this decision was not made specifically for the Algarve, but it benefits the region. It is crucial to enhance the frequency of connections to Lisbon, including direct routes from the Barlavento, and shorten travel time. This decision brings us significant regional benefits.”
Cristóvão Norte maintains that “it is important to improve the conditions of inter-regional connections, between the Algarve and the rest of the country, and try to obtain an agreement from Spain so that, in the long term, the Mediterranean corridor includes the Algarve. However, this requires a connection from Seville to Ayamonte, and those who decide to do so are the Spanish.”
He adds, “It is essential to advance and enhance the intra-regional network by connecting the airport, adjusting routes to shorten travel times, establishing a genuine regional inter-city network, and implementing a regional transportation policy where the railway plays a key role”.
