Algarve History Association upcoming events

The Algarve History Association has two events this month.

First, a baroque concert on St Patrick’s Day (Sunday, March 17) by two local musicians who use the name Ensemble Gli Accenti.

Catarina Lemos e Melo, on the harpsichord, and Romeu Madeira, on the baroque violin, will perform works by Albinoni, Handel, Telemann and Forqueray. These four composers were born within a 14-year period in the 17th century. Strangely, Telemann is one of the few Baroque entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The concert will begin at 4pm at Quintinha da Música, near Tavira. Tickets, at €25, are available from Peter on peterbooker1347@gmail.com

The AHA’s history presentation this month covers the history of the ‘Industries of the Algarve’. Following the February presentation on barrels and their use in the export of fish, Peter Booker, co-founder of AHA, takes the story further to cover fishing and its offshoot, the canning industry.

He will also touch on cork, dried fruit and salt, before moving on to the more modern railways, tourism and golf courses.

Peter’s presentations will be in the municipal libraries of Lagoa on Tuesday, March 26 at 6pm and Tavira on Friday, April 5 at 11am.
