History talk features guest speaker José Curto, an emeritus don from York University in Toronto
The Algarve History Association’s (AHA) next presentation will feature guest speaker José Curto, an emeritus don from York University in Toronto. His presentation will cover a period of recent history, and with a Canadian slant.
Portuguese emigrants have taken root in many countries around the world, and there are many success stories among them. José’s presentation will cover the lives of an ordinary family from the Azores, and their struggle to find their feet in their new circumstances of the big cities of Canada. The title of his presentation is “A life in a short frame: the story of Fernanda Tavares”.
AHA talks are free, and there is opportunity to make a contribution to the running of the association.
Dates and venues: Tuesday, March 25, at 6pm in Lagoa Library; Friday, March 28 at 11am in Tavira Library. There will be a lunch after the Tavira talk – register your interest by email: peterbooker1347@gmail.com
April concert
The next concert in the AHA 2024/2025 series will take place on Sunday, April 13, at 5pm, titled “Opera Rebels”. The performers will be Ana Carmen Balestra (soprano) and Rosa Herwig (mezzo soprano), accompanied by Julius Backer at the piano.
The concert will include duets, and arias from operas, together with chansons and songs from musicals. Featured composers are Bizet, Vivaldi, Piazzolla, Jacques Brel and Wim Sonneveld.
