The Algarve History Association (AHA) has announced its upcoming events for May, including the return of guided walks in historic Tavira.
History talks
Historian Peter Booker, president of AHA, will give his next presentation on Friday, May 2, at 11am in Tavira Library. He will cover Famous Portuguese.
“It is difficult for foreigners to consider famous individuals of other countries in their proper light, and without this basic knowledge, how can the immigrant properly appreciate the culture of that country and its view of its own past?” says Peter.
AHA talks are free, and there is opportunity to make a contribution to the running of the association. A lunch will be planned after the talk in Tavira – if you wish to book for lunch, please email peterbooker1347@gmail.com
For personal reasons, Peter is unable to hold this talk in Lagoa. He will return to the town on May 27.
Guided historical walks in Tavira
AHA is again providing guided walks around historic Tavira. There are three walks: first around the Old Town, the Vila-a-Dentro; second around the growing Medieval Town; and third around the northern suburb, Além da Ponte, on the other side of the river. Each of them lasts about 90 minutes; and each of them requires an ability to walk for that length of time, with no pauses for resting in cafés. There is a small charge (€5) for each participant.
Dates for these excursions are as follows, all at 11am:
- Walk 1 – Wednesday, May 7 / Tuesday, May 13
- Walk 2 – Thursday, May 8 / Wednesday, May 21
- Walk 3 – Wednesday, May 14 / Thursday, May 22

Concert at Quintinha da Música
The next concert in the AHA 2024/2025 series will take place on Sunday, May 25, at 5pm, at Quintinha da Música, near Tavira. Its title is ‘A Place of Our Own’ given by Duo Tágide.
The performers will be Inês Simões (soprano) and Daniel Godinho (piano). Performance pieces include pearls from the Baroque right up to contemporary compositions. Composers range from Schubert and Wagner, Sibelius and Mahler up to Messiaen and Berio, and other contemporaries such as Basto and Crumb.
Reservations cost €30 and should be made through peterbooker1347@gmail.com
