Algarve mayoral candidates confirm bids

António Pina, Hélder Martins and Ricardo Calé will be running

Three new mayoral candidates have confirmed their bids in the Algarve for the 2025 local elections (Eleições Autárquicas).

António Pina, currently serving his last term as mayor of Olhão, will be the Socialist Party (PS) candidate for Faro, having been selected with 90% of the votes last week at a meeting of the PS Municipal Political Commission of Faro. Says the commission, Pina has the “necessary determination and vision” to restore Faro’s “centrality” after 16 years of “aimless PSD leadership”.

In Loulé, the candidate representing the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) will be Hélder Martins, the current president of the Algarve Hotel and Tourist Establishments Association (AHETA), who ran 12 years ago and lost to current PS mayor Vítor Aleixo, who is serving his final term. “(Martins) is the right man for the job, especially after this long Socialist stagnation,” PSD Loulé says in a statement.

Lastly in Olhão, councillor Ricardo Calé has confirmed he will be running for PS. His bid is focused on “five big pillars: health, housing, education, employment and our identity,” he told Barlavento newspaper.
