Algarve MP Cristóvão Norte steps down temporarily due to family reasons

Alexandra Evangelista, leader of PSD Portimão, is taking over his position

Cristóvão Norte, the vice-president of PSD‘s parliamentary group and an MP representing the Algarve, has temporarily stepped down from his positions due to “family reasons” – later revealed to be the birth of his son.

Norte will be replaced by Alexandra Evangelista, the current leader of PSD Portimão, who is set to take over his position as MP this Tuesday.

The MP shared the news on his social media, explaining that Evangelista, a law graduate and senior public servant, will represent Faro in parliament during his absence. Originally from Angola, Evangelista moved to Portimão at the age of eight and has since become a key figure in local politics. She has held roles in regional and local government and has been a leading voice in the PSD’s Algarve branch.

In a statement, Evangelista expressed both her honor and responsibility in stepping into the role at such a crucial time.

“It’s a privilege to represent the Algarve and serve the country, especially when so many urgent issues demand attention,” she stated.

“I will do my best, but I will pay special attention to regional issues, particularly those in the western Algarve, such as Portimão Hospital, the housing access crisis, or the water shortage, which is more severe in the western Algarve,” Evangelista added.

Cristóvão Norte stressewd that PSD Algarve has “full confidence” in the work of the new MP, considering that her “integrity, sense of public service, preparation, and competence offer guarantees of extremely high-quality performance that will bring prestige to the Algarve” in parliament.
