Algarve’s diverse offerings showcased in Madrid
Portugal’s Algarve region is highlighting its wine tourism, major sporting events, and local gastronomy at Spain’s International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid.
The Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) announced its strategy on Tuesday, involving promoting the region’s diverse offerings, from its famous beaches and cliffs to its picturesque villages, the friendliness of its residents and its unique food and gastronomy.
“Our presence (at FITUR) allows us to showcase the diversity of what we have to offer and establish new partnerships with the Ibero-American market, particularly Spain,” RTA president André Gomes said, cited in a press release.
To woo more tourists to the region, RTA will be promoting its growing wine tourism sector along with the world-class sports events held in the region.
FITUR kicked off today (January 22) in Madrid for industry professionals and opens to the public over the weekend (January 25-26). Starting at 3pm on Saturday, FITUR attendees can explore the Algarve’s growing reputation as a wine tourism destination during a special presentation, “Food & Wine: The Algarve as a Wine Tourism Destination.” The session will present the Algarve Wine Route, the candidacy for European City of Wine 2026 which brings together Lagoa, Monchique, Portimão and São Brás de Alportel, and the upcoming Food & Wine Algarve Festival 2025.
Later that day, the spotlight will shift to major sports events scheduled for 2025, including the Volta ao Algarve (February 19–23), the Algarve Granfondo cycling festival (February 22), and the MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix (November 7–9).
Portugal’s presence at FITUR this year is its biggest yet, with 120 companies and representatives from the country’s seven tourism regions. Spanning 1,700 square metres at the IFEMA exhibition centre, Portugal’s stand features four more companies than in 2024.
