Olhos de Água real estate company Seacliff has lodged an administrative action challenging the favorable environmental impact statement paving the way for a desalination plant near Praia da Falésia, Albufeira.
Seacliff argues that the whole project is “based on a lie (…) perpetrated by Águas do Algarve, that this project will guarantee the resilience of the Algarve’s public water supply”.
Explains the text submitted in the action to Loulé Administrative Court: “It is enough to see what is happening in Spain where there are 766 desalination plants, and still very serious problems with water supply to understand that this desalination plant will not resolve the problem it wants to resolve”.
Seacliff’s action is supported by 15 environmental associations – banding together as PAS, the Platform for Sustainable Water, which has been explaining what the Algarve needs before millions of euros are spent on desalination – and over 150 citizens. A recent debate in Quarteira also highlighted the downsides of this plan.
