Algarve seawater warmer than normal

Beachgoers in the Algarve may have noticed in recent days that seawater is even warmer than usual

Seawater temperatures in the Algarve have been warmer in recent days than the average registered in the last 10 years.

So says the Portuguese Navy, which reveals that the region has “experienced a significant rise in sea surface temperatures,” with the waters off Faro reaching a peak of 25.1°C. The data comes from the Navy’s integrated environmental monitoring system (MONIZEE) managed by the Hydrographic Institute.

While this temperature surge is notable, it still falls short of breaking historical records set over the past decade.

According to the Navy, the highest temperature recorded in the region remains at 26.5°C, registered by the Faro ‘Costeira’ buoy (CSA82/D) on July 28, 2016.

Similarly, the Faro ‘Oceânica’ buoy (CSA81) recorded a near-record temperature of 26.3°C on September 6, 2021.
