Algarve offers “diving experiences that few destinations can match”
The Algarve is on a mission to establish itself as a world-class diving destination, with a focus on promoting the Pedra do Valado Marine Natural Park, a stunning marine reserve brimming with diverse sea life between Albufeira and Lagoa.
This commitment to underwater tourism was highlighted at the World Travel Market in London, where the Algarve’s unique underwater exhibit, the EDP Art Reef, was awarded a prestigious prize by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) for its innovative and artistic value.
The exhibit, created by Portuguese artist Vhils, features 13 sculptures made from old power plant equipment, installed 10 meters below the surface off the coast of Albufeira. In August, the mayor of Albufeira hailed the “very positive” impact of the town’s underwater exhibition, adding that there has been a “lot of demand for diving” in the area since the underwater exhibition was created. It was even named by Time magazine as one of the World’s Greatest Places 2024.
Algarve tourism boss André Gomes, who heads the regional tourism board (RTA) and association (ATA), attended the prize-giving ceremony in London and spoke about the region’s potential in the diving sector.
“In the coming years, the Algarve could become a top diving destination, thanks to our unique natural heritage in this area of nautical tourism,” Gomes said.
One of the main diving attractions is the Pedra do Valado Marine Natural Park, home to a wide range of underwater species, including groupers, octopuses, and vibrant corals with “significant ecological and economic importance”. To ensure the park remains sustainable, Algarve authorities are developing new regulations and certifications for diving activities, aligning with international standards for safe and eco-friendly tourism.
In addition to Pedra do Valado and the EDP Art Reef, the Algarve boasts the Ocean Revival underwater park off Portimão’s coast, where divers can explore four decommissioned naval ships, home to the “world’s largest artificial reef” and a thriving habitat for marine life.
“With these three unique dive sites within a few kilometres of each other, the Algarve stands out as a unique destination for the diving community, with an offer of underwater experiences that few destinations in the world can match,” added Gomes.
