Algarve to host 2032 International Citrus Congress

International Citrus Congress will take place in Portugal’s Algarve region in 2032

The Algarve has been chosen to host the International Citrus Congress in 2032, an event that brings together hundreds of experts and industry leaders every four years.

The decision was made during this year’s congress in South Korea, the regional development commission (CCDR Algarve) announced on Tuesday, following a successful bid by the University of Algarve, CCDR Algarve, and AlgarOrange, Portugal’s largest citrus producers’ association, with support from several agricultural and research institutions.

According to CCDR Algarve, the Algarve is Portugal’s main citrus producer, concentrating around 88% of the country’s citrus fruit production. Its climate is considered ideal to produce high-quality citrus fruits, which are recognised under the EU’s Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) label. The region’s citrus sector contributes approximately €388 million annually to the local economy, adds CCDR Algarve.

Recent figures show a 10% increase in citrus production over previous years, a trend that is expected to continue. In 2023 alone, exports of citrus fruit grown in the Algarve exceeded €197 million.

Previous editions of the International Citrus Congress took place in Spain, Brazil, Turkey, and South Korea, with Italy set to host in 2028.
