Algarve tourism: thriving August sees all-around growth

August was another successful month for the Algarve’s tourism sector, which saw an increase in overnight stays (+1.8%), guests (+9.6%) and revenue (+7.4%) compared to the same month in 2018.

The data has been revealed by the National Statistics Institute (INE), which reports that the Algarve welcomed around 782,000 guests during the busiest month of the year which translated into around 3.4 million overnight stays, while revenue reached the €262 million mark.

There was a 10.7% increase in the number of Brits visiting the Algarve in August (142,100), with Spain (77,600), France (49,600), Ireland (37,600) and Germany (33,500) also among the region’s main tourist markets.

INE also highlighted an increase in the number of Brazilian (+47.2%) and American (+22.3%) holidaymakers visiting the region.

Algarve tourism boss João Fernandes is delighted by the news, saying that the region was able to “successfully overcome a challenging month with the uncertainty of Brexit, the slowing of Germany’s economy and the unusual heat waves in rival destinations”.
