Algarve under orange alert on Friday due to stormy weather

Heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast in Algarve

The effects of Storm Kirk are still being felt in Portugal as the Algarve is bracing for severe weather this Friday after the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued an orange weather alert for the district of Faro.

The warning, which indicates a moderate to high risk of extreme weather, comes in response to forecasts of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the region.

While all of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow alert for rain starting from 3am on Friday, Faro will be the only district under the more serious orange alert. The orange alert will be in effect until 3pm, at which point it will be downgraded to yellow and remain in place until Saturday afternoon.

The nearby district of Beja in the Alentejo region is also forecast to experience thunderstorms, though it will remain under a yellow alert.

According to IPMA, an orange alert signals a potentially dangerous weather situation with a heightened risk of disruption, while the yellow alert cautions against possible risks, particularly for outdoor activities.

In addition to Faro, other regions will face prolonged yellow warnings. Bragança and Guarda will remain under yellow alerts until 3pm, while districts including Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Porto, and Viseu are expected to remain under alert until 9pm. The central and southern regions—such as Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Beja, and Lisbon—will experience the yellow alert until Saturday, with some areas affected until 9pm.

The IPMA’s forecast for Thursday suggests cloudy skies with the possibility of light showers, accompanied by weak winds and a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly overnight lows.
