Algarve’s Bella Acapella chorus wins gold in Spain

The Bella Acapella chorus won a gold medal at the International Barbershop En Armonía Convention 2024, held in Calpe (Spain) from April 4 to 7.

“After seven months of working almost exclusively on our two competition songs, focusing on all the details, making the chords beautiful, blending our voices in harmony, we won the gold medal in the Iberian category and were ranked first in singing,” said member Alexandra Bitoun.

The group was seated together among the audience when the announcement was made.

“It was such a burst of joy and excitement. We are so proud to have achieved this together. Along our laborious path to this victory, we were coached by Paul Davies and Stuart Sides; we owe them so much,” she stated. “On our weekly journey to this outcome, we were led by our beloved and energetic musical director, Rob Does, and our amazing leaders, without whom nothing would have happened.”

Bella Acapella is an international group with 30 members that sings barbershop music and is open to new members, from beginners to more experienced singers. Its repertoire includes everything from classics such as “Summertime” and “Java Jive” to more modern pieces such as “Rhythm Of Love”, “Until I Found You”, “Count On Me” and “The Climb”.

All members live in the Algarve and mostly originate from England, Ireland, Germany, France and the Netherlands. During rehearsals, which take place every Wednesday at the Re-Criativa Cultural Centre in Olhão, the common language is English.
