Algarve’s water restrictions relieved, pending regular reviews

Today’s Council of Ministers has confirmed that restrictions on water consumption imposed on the Algarve can be lifted for the time being, pending regular reviews. The decision comes on the basis that “even if it doesn’t rain again this year, even a drop, there will still be water for a guaranteed year of urban consumption”, said minister for the presidency António Leitão Amaro – stressing “this is a proportional relief, obviously prioritising urban consumption by families”. At the same time the government is powering forwards with structural improvements on water supply networks and focusing on initiatives already ‘approved’ under the PRR – plan for recovery and resilience. These initiatives include the desalination plant scheduled for Albufeira which many local people are intent on fighting (see top stories box for more details).
