Algerians hold protest over bureaucratic ‘delays’ holding up residency applications

Algerians living in Portugal – and representing a community of around 10,000 – have shown today how difficult it is to become legalised here.

The crowd mounting a protest outside the offices of AIMA (the agency for integration, migrations and asylum) in Lisbon, explain that the Portuguese consulate in Algiers appears to be dragging its feet over issuing apostilles of criminal registers.

Without these documents, Algerians who have jobs and are paying into the social security system, cannot apply for residency, and have other basic rights denied them.
