It is described by locals as the “best sweet potato in the world” and is the focal point of an annual festival in Aljezur designed to showcase how delicious it really is.
The ‘Festival da Batata-Doce de Aljezur’ will be held between Friday, November 29 and Sunday, December 1 at the town’s Espaço Multiusos between 12 noon and midnight.
The event is free to attend and allows everyone to enjoy the long list of entertainment, showcooking events and stands selling local produce.
If you’ve never heard about Aljezur’s sweet potatoes, then it’s time to head to that western Algarve town. Several recipes on how to cook with sweet potato will be revealed, showing how versatile this root vegetable really is. It can be oven-baked, fried in slices or even cooked as a sweet with sugar and cinnamon.
While locals try to show everyone why they believe their sweet potato is so special, the truth is that Aljezur’s variety has already been officially recognised as a product with a protected designation of origin.
Local confectioners will be making and selling all kinds of cakes, sweets and tarts that promise to delight everyone’s sweet tooth.
The event is organised by Aljezur council and the Aljezur Association of Sweet Potato Producers.
