All creatures great and small…

APAA tries to do everything possible for all creatures

Hedgehogs are shy creatures, not used to being made a fuss of. So, it is with little wonder that a stray, spiny, sporting pal found its way into a cagey situation.

Marie Pinto had asked APAA’s President Jenny Clarke for assistance with an ailing cat, leaving the trap in a quiet shady spot complete with a portion of feline food. “Hedgehogs love cat food, nice and mushy.” Mm. Unfortunately, the ageing puss had passed away.

Marie has guineapigs amongst her animal kingdom and is quite happy to have her visitor to add to her countryside home’s wildlife.

“APAA’s motto is ‘Here to Help’ and we try to do everything possible for all creatures. Great or small,” said Jenny. The Association for the Protection of Animals in the Algarve has a kind heart and reminds us that charity is often a difficult word to deal with. “It does begin at home!” Pardon. “Homing abandoned animals.”

Jenny has just finished packing her van for the Ferragudo Car Boot Fair. “Finally, we have some decent weather.”

Education is an ongoing ‘mantra’. Joe, the 17-year-old son of APAA’s VP Jane, is her car boot buddy. “Silves Secondary School is an ongoing Team APAA students’ stronghold,” said Jenny. “Anyone with an animal question goes to Joe for advice and help.” Good start young!

Advice for adults? APAA can help existing residents and newcomers alike on their animal needs. A future furry friend could be at a nearby shelter waiting for you! “It could be love at first sight, or you may need a visit or two to warm to each other.” Don’t hold back!

Event for your diary

  • Friday, June 7, 3.30pm-5.30pm: The Real Thing for He-man caves and She-girl sheds! Casa de Pasto da Parreirinha, outskirts of Odelouca. Tools and stuff for the home and garden. DIY’ers be warned! All funds raised by APAA are to maintain ever-growing cat-colonies and abandoned, often seriously injured, dogs looking for fostering or new homes, as well as to support APAA’s ongoing spaying and neutering programme SNiP. If you want to help, have good ideas, or cat food donations, contact Jenny. Feel the need to help? Volunteers for Team APAA are always made welcome.
