Team APAA want to thank all their friends and followers for their support through a sad and challenging time
Just what APAA’s president, ‘Captain’ Jenny Clarke, needed. “It has been a character-building time for all of us. We can’t say how much we have missed Zélia. Her outstanding work … her sheer commitment.”
Team APAA want to thank all their friends and followers for their support through a sad and challenging time. Not to mention their ‘Here to Help’ motto being put to extra use at the beginning of a very busy season.
“We have managed to re-home a good many of Zélia’s APAA lodgers and personal menagerie.” Amongst the many helpers, thanks go to: small sanctuary run by Carina Ferreira called ‘Luna’s retreat’; Sarah Lang who took on older animals; ARA’s ‘Cabanita’ shelter in Loulé; visitors who came and were able to take a cat; our Facebook contacts and editor Lisa Dowling; and, above all, Jackie Billings, APAA’s treasurer and Zélia’s friend and next door neighbour, helping out all hours.
“Although a sad and emotional time, it was also uplifting having all the wonderful support from everyone,” Jenny has a huge grin. “Especially someone to manage our ‘Help Line’ suddenly turning up. A Portuguese lady called Wanda, who has vast experience setting up cat colonies in the Salgados/Guia area. Due to recent illness, she needs to take a backseat, now ‘womanning’ our ‘life-line’. Wanda also speaks excellent English and French.” Great timing, Wanda! A huge thank you to all.
The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve is moving on. “We know that’s what Zélia wanted, full of energy and ‘go for it’ attitude. So, here we were, almost pouring rain holding off for the first APAA Ferragudo market and car boot sale. We took a handsome amount!” All proceeds go for (SNiP) sterilisation of feral cats, supporting cat-colonies and abandoned animals.
“We’ve had such an amazing turn-over of goodies in both our charity shops in Alvor and Silves, we’re now on the scrounge to replenish shelves and rails.” Jenny’s van is still stuffed to the brim ferrying items back-and-forth. “We know there are a lot of wonderful gifts people do not want, still waiting in boxes in the cupboard somewhere, waiting to be discovered, as well as unwanted kitchen and gardening equipment, not to mention the books and paintings.” Got it!
