All mainland districts warned to brace for worsening weather

Rain, hail, thunderstorms, high winds: they are all forecast

With the Algarve at least basking in sunshine and mellow temperatures today, Civil Protection authority ANEPC warns it isn’t going to last. Tomorrow will see weather conditions worsen throughout the country, with the south expected to get some of it (and quite a bit more rain).

In a statement, ANEPC states that IPMA (meteorological institute) is forecasting “rain, sometimes heavy, hail and thunderstorms, wind, with gusts of up to 85 kilometres/hour on the coast and up to 100 km/h in the highlands, strong sea agitation on the coastal plain, with waves up to five metres, and snowfall at the highest points of Serra da Estrela tomorrow, which could extend to lower areas from Saturday onwards”.

The bad weather could cause flooding in urban areas/ streams and rivers to overflow/ landslides, as well as road accidents, thus people are warned to be on the alert, and to clear drainage systems, check they have no ‘loose structures’ likely to be taken by gusts of wind, etc etc.

The main advice is ‘keep up with weather news’, and be sensible.

Saturday is expected to see all districts ‘visited’ by weather misery, and under ‘yellow weather warnings’, with Sunday a day of ‘great sea agitation’ in coastal districts, including the entirety of the Algarve.
