Nearly 70% of students at the University of Coimbra intend to emigrate in the future, with 40% thinking of leaving Portugal in the next five years and around 30% in the next decade, a survey by the Academic Association revealed today. With Coimbra being an equivalent in terms of status to Oxford or Cambridge universities in the UK, the ‘seriousness’ of Portugal’s ‘brain drain’ could not be clearer. The data shows that two out of every three students are thinking of emigrating, of which two out of every five are thinking of doing so in the next five years. And the reason? Over 96% point to ‘salary conditions’ (as Portugal’s ‘reward’ for graduates – whose families have really struggled to put them through higher education – is to tend to offer them the minimum wage…)
