Almost €1 billion to be pumped into SNS to help settle debts

The Portuguese government will transfer almost €1 billion to local health units and Portuguese cancer institutes to reduce debts and strengthen the sustainability of the National Health Service (SNS), it announced on Wednesday.

“Over the course of this week, the government will transfer €975.5 million to the entities of the National Health Service (SNS) to reduce the debts of these entities,” reads a joint statement from the ministries of Finance and Health.

According to the document, the figure of €975,587,251 is intended to “strengthen the commitment to the financial sustainability of the SNS”, with “reinforcements being made to the local health units (ULS) and the Portuguese Oncology Institutes (IPO)”.
