‘Ambushed’ GNR agents shoot armed man dead in Bragança

Both GNR agents injured in shoot-out

Two GNR agents were injured last night following an ambush in Calvelhe, Bragança district, in which their armed assailant died.

Recently released from jail, the assailant had allegedly been threatening building workers with a gun, firing a number of shots, before police were called.

Arriving at the scene, the two policemen were also met with gunfire.

The assailant had taken refuge in an outbuilding on the site, and in spite of police ‘identifying themselves’, he is understood to have shot back at them “to which they fired back in self-defence”, says a statement released by the GNR last night.

In the exchange of shots, the assailant was killed – and both police injured, one seriously, albeit he is now in a stable condition in hospital.

The GNR statement explains “the National Republican Guard is following the evolution of its wounded soldiers and deeply regrets the loss of a human life”.

PJ police are investigating, while tabloid reports suggest the shooter “had kept the local population in a state of heightened tension since his release from jail, with threats and acts of violence”.

The Izeda fire department attended the scene late yesterday afternoon, and told Lusa news agency that the dead man was in his 60s.

Little more appears to be known at this point.

The worst injured GNR agent suffered a gunshot to his groin, writes Correio da Manhã, while his partner was hit by shrapnel.

This is the second fatal shooting involving police in little more than two weeks.
