“Animals are our saviours.” Jenny Clarke, president of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, has two dogs. “Five used to be my lucky number.” Time has marched on, as our summer leaps into autumn, as do our age groups in the Algarve.
“The strange thing is, we, at APAA, spend our lives in the dedication of saving animals.” Yes. “Fact is, we probably are driven by the fact that we need them, as much as they need us.” Goes without saying. Humans and their pets, albeit a furry cat or a hairy dog, with birds, tortoises, mice in between. “A phenomenon that people of a certain age find is that when our friends have moved on, in many different ways, our emotions and needs are still intact. We still need a bond. So, we turn to our animal kingdom for that special relationship.”
Many of the residents here in the Algarve have turned to their four-pawed friends at a moment of despair, joy, emptiness, need. “Animals have an uncanny way of knowing; their sixth sense, I suppose.” Jenny smiles ruefully. It is a problem, when reaching a certain time in our lives, that we have to admit that although a human, more permanent companion is no longer a viable or required option, a feline or canine alternative other is a wonderful way of having companionship and a responsibility at the same time.

“We do warn older people to ensure that their match is made in heaven before embarking on a long-term relationship.” Yes, Jenny. Got it. Need help? Consult the websites on older owners and pets. The best breeds for tolerance, love and their cuddle ratio. Or not, as the case may be. Talk to a vet.
Stumped? Ask ‘Here to Help’ APAA. They have contacts with many shelters and charities who have beautiful animals waiting for a loving forever home, which you may be able to offer in return for love, loyalty, friendship and a goodnight lick! A good morning stretch and tumble … breakfast on the balcony. Get that lead! Got it.
APAA are deep in thought for their next season. ‘Pop-Up’ Shops, events (lunches and dinners), themed or not, car boot sales… “We are always looking for new ideas. If anyone out there wants to be a member, or just help out from time to time, we are always pleased to welcome you aboard.” Boring it is not.
Their two charity shops in Alvor and Silves are always loaded with goodies for makeovers, personal, apartment, patio, gardens, houses. Books and ornaments, bedding, glassware and kitchen stuff. “Bring your good quality items and buy something to make a change.” Volunteers always on hand to help and advise on purchases.
