Animal Corner – Save Our Skins

S.O.S.! Well, sponsoring is one way of helping the animal kingdom. A worldwide endeavour – elephants, tigers, the list goes on… Endangered species.

“We wish abandoned animals were a thing of the past,” Jenny Clarke, president of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) has been talking with Pet Park’s Gary and Wendy, just outside Mexilhoeira Grande. “We’ve re-homed dogs from here and directly from owners, for some time with success.”

Gary has just brought out ‘Lady’, or ‘Jess’, as she has become known. There are smiles all around. “Jess was caught on camera playing around with two other dogs.” It got posted on Facebook. “The owner was highly impressed. She has decided to give Jess a trial run.” High five!

‘Nina’, sadly, passed away in her sleep a few weeks ago. She had been sponsored. The trust now goes to ‘Lilly’. She was a sweet loving dog; owner went into care. No dogs! “We still have dear little ‘Dusty’. Been here some time now.”

Wendy has handed out treats to all the lodgers, paying and otherwise.

“APAA have ‘Rafa’ here as well.” Jenny and Pet Park have been hoping to re-home him for some time now. A handsome good-natured German Shepherd. Coming up for three years old now. “He needs the right environment and care. Lots of space too. Amazing companion and guard-dog.”

Anyone interested in sponsoring ‘Dusty’ or ‘Rafa’? You can always visit them and bring a treat. Get to know them – perhaps a re-homing at the end of the tunnel?

Meanwhile, Zélia, APAA’s cat woman, has been busier than ever. A new colony turned up with about 13 of the feline-furry-fertile-feral friends. SNiP’ping shears at the ready. “One got away.” Zélia is not beaten off. She went, found the little creature and everything back under control. Jenny grins. “For now!”
