Animal Rescue Algarve (ARA) held its annual fundraising dinner on Friday, November 17, at Monty’s Restaurant in Vale do Lobo.
Attended by more than 100 supporters, mostly from the Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago area, the dinner, which featured 12 auction prizes and more than 60 raffle tickets kindly donated by local businesses to support the cause, raised more than €25,000 that night, which is of great importance since the annual running costs of the shelter in Cabanita in Loulé are more than €450,000 and it depends entirely on private donations and the proceeds from its “WOOFF” charity shops.
During the dinner, founder Sid Richardson thanked all those who support the association, which over the last four years has been responsible for rescuing and rehoming around 1,300 animals and is involved in various community projects, among them “Vila dos Gatos“, through which around 1,000 cats have already been sterilised in the municipality of Loulé.
ARA has protocols with various schools in the municipality, with the aim of helping to change the mentality of future generations in relation to animal welfare. In recent years, ARA has also relied on the help of around 1,600 volunteers from all over the world, who are able to stay at the shelter and have been fundamental to its operation.
Everyone can help make a change, either by making a small regular donation; donating items for the animals; donating quality clothes or furniture to the shops; or by volunteering in one of the charity shops or at the shelter.
