“It’s their time really – to grow, to learn, to educate…” Jenny Clarke, APAA
The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) commences its new season’s popular ‘Pop-Up’ shops and stalls. “We’ve had a monumentally wonderful year. Our Spaying & Neutering Programme, or ‘SNiP’, has raised a lot of money, controversially for feral cat-colonies. Sometimes we dig deep for funding, but we manage to get there in the end!”
Jenny Clarke, APAA’s president, has been ploughing the ‘Here to Help’ field for years, knowing that if you put in good seed, eventually a good harvest will follow. “But we need the younger generation on board.” As luck would have it, some smart kids have taken their own initiative, including Silves International School, Nobel International Porches, Margarida Cardoso of a Portimão secondary school, a new APAA member wants to encourage ‘teens’ to help where they can. “It’s their time really – to grow, to learn, to educate. Animal welfare is always someone else’s problem …”
Jenny’s small but eager team are always pressing for new ideas. Their cast-off clothing, ‘gear’, whatever, will be taken to Alvor charity shop for sale. “Kids will be eager to buy cheap stuff they can re-cycle.” Cool. “Talking of which our ‘tote-bags’ have become very popular.”
APAA asked professional photographer Carlos Filipe to do the unenviable task. Judging members’ photos of their pets for their prestigious appearance on the bags. “In the end, I had to choose two of each.” Carlos has winning selection criteria. “Different. Unusual. Unforgettable.” Yup! Carlos also gave up his time to assist Jackie Billings, APAA’s Treasurer, with the final ‘tote’ design. Woof!
