Animals put down for lack of treatment money

An increasing amount of people are asking for their pets to be put down when they do not have the money for medical treatments, according to the vice-president of the Portuguese Veterinarian Order.

Speaking to TSF radio station, Luís Cruz revealed these sad cases are becoming more frequent. He explained that “good clients who used to do everything for their pets” are now too strapped for cash to treat them.

But the president of the Portuguese Association of Veterinary Medical Specialists in Companion Animals (APMVEAC) stressed the need for lateral thinking. Jorge Cid explained that treatments can be paid for in instalments and some vets are even meeting clients mid-way by contributing out of their own pockets to save animals’ lives.
