APAA and ARA taking the lead

It is no coincidence that the two principal animal caring associations are not just friends. As we would say, they have a ‘special relationship’. Indeed.

Jenny Clarke, president of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve, runs a small but tight ship. Their motto ‘Here to Help’ has been synonymous with their activities throughout the years. “Once a shelter, now a real charity to help animals whether on the streets, owned or in care.”

Who else but APAA to understand the need for care and help amongst the many needy. “We don’t just help animals,” Jenny is assertive. “Helping other charities and shelters is our responsibility.”

This year, their official 30th anniversary found Treasurer Jackie Billings financially juggling the books. “We had an extraordinary year. Advisedly, sharing the profits amongst those in need.” Well done.

Jenny, Jackie, Jane (VP) and the top-drawer echelon decided to distribute their well-earned funds amongst several needy requestors, either through membership or outsiders. “Deciding on the beneficiaries was difficult. So many in need.”

Team APAA came up with the solution: all the requestors, having been approved through review and discussion, received an amount. Woah! Perhaps not all that was needed, but no one was left in need!

Animal Rescue Algarve’s HQ ‘Cabanita’, just outside of Loulé, is a wonderful shelter. A dream come true. Purpose-built as an animal sanctuary and rescue centre. General manager João Ferreira is always busy. “In the past four years, we have taken 100 or so dogs from Absol (animal shelter in Loulé). Fortunately, all re-homed except one.”

Apparently, there is a lot of work being carried out by Absol and the city council. They have been providing improved shaded areas and spaces for the animals at Bem Estar (association running Absol). “However, our main concern is for measures to be taken so this does not happen again.” ARA and PAN, the People, Animal and Nature party, are also looking into this situation, where several municipalities used Bem Estar as a dumping ground for impossible cases of animal welfare. “Hopefully, the meetings will continue with the various municipalities to avoid such atrocities in the future.”

Jenny has visited ARA’s ‘Cabanita’ on many occasions with dedicated member Anita Wight. “It is a monumental flagship to all who care about our four-legged creatures. Some dare to call animals “furry friends” or “pets” and then treat them so inhumanely.” Incredible.

When digging into pockets, purses and wallets, please think about where your donation is going. “Yes, there are a few dodgy businesses about. Charities so called. But heavens-above, this is about saving animals and helping them to a better life and future.”
