Asbestos to be removed from Silves health centre

Algarve health authority ARS is investing €245,000 to remove asbestos, a toxic material linked to cancer, from the roof tiles of Silves health centre. The project also involves a series of improvement works outside the centre.

A tender for the works, estimated to last four months, was launched recently.

Silves mayor Rosa Palma has welcomed the news, saying that the asbestos roof tiles had been a local concern for a long time.

The local health centre is used by over 32,000 people. It has a team of eight doctors, which according to Palma is not enough.

“The lack of doctors is a serious issue that needs to be solved,” she told Correio da Manhã, adding that around 15,000 residents still don’t have a family doctor.
