At ease at the Clínica Má Partilha

FOLLOWING IN the footsteps of her father and grandfather before her, Dr. Jutta Meycke is the third generation of dentists in her family. Having arrived in the Algarve eight years ago from her native Germany, she opened her own practice in Alvor earlier this year.

With the help of her daughter, Sina, the two searched the area for suitable premises for the dental clinic. “It wasn’t easy to find the right place to buy as we had to find somewhere that ticked all the boxes for inspection – it had to be wheelchair friendly, for instance,” says Sina.

However, when they found the current location, they knew it was right. Not only are there no steps, it is in a new apartment complex, is easy to find and there is plenty of parking space in front of the building. “The space was just right for us,” says Jutta.

Challenge

Sina, who assists her mother in the dental practice, says although she is still learning, she is improving very quickly. “It is a new experience for me. It is such an intimate thing, working on someone’s teeth so I try to give something of me so the patient feels more comfortable,” she says. “By the time the patient leaves, they usually have tummy ache from too much laughing!” she adds.

As well as enjoying a challenge – fillings on the front teeth for example – Jutta is particularly good at dealing with people who are very scared, as well as children, helping them to feel more at ease. “I feel proud that many of my patients have learned during treatment that dentistry is not the nightmare that some people believe. It is so satisfying when people leave happy,” says Jutta.
