As Portuguese medical experts warned, this year’s flu vaccine was not prepared for 2015’s deadly strain of the virus which has now claimed “at least 1000 more lives than expected by the authorities”. According to health director Graça de Freitas, the worst is still to come, with the elderly and chronically ill the most likely to be affected. The virulent H2N3 strain led to over a million deaths worldwide in a flu outbreak in 1969.
