For the last concerts of 2023, the Amigos de Música will present two recitals with Portuguese pianist Nuno Marques, originally from Porto but now established in New York.
The award-winning pianist, co-founder and musical director of the Porto Pianofest, will come from New York to present the two concerts on December 19 and 20 at the Os Agostos estate, near Sta Bárbara de Nêxe.
On Tuesday, December 19, Nuno Marques will play Bach, Chopin and Villa-Lobos, while on Wednesday, December 20, he will present works by Debussy, Liszt, Gershwin and Arvo Pärt.
Nuno Marques, an acclaimed Portuguese pianist, is one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation. He has established a successful international career from his current base in New York City and is the founder and artistic director of Porto Pianofest, an annual international music festival.
Founded in 2016 with the aim of supporting the new generation of pianists and bringing the greatest mentors and musicians to his homeland, the festival has quickly gained international recognition, expanding its activity to New York City and Washington DC.
As a soloist, Nuno Marques performed with several orchestras worldwide and played in some of the most renowned music halls, including Carnegie Hall. Nuno Marques is Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from Rutgers University and a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Royal College of Music in London.
Nuno Marques was in fact the first protégé of the AAMSL Young Portuguese Music Student Scholarship program launched in 1994 by the Amigos de Música.
The Association of Amigos de Música, formed in 1991 as a non-profit organisation, was fortunate in attracting some generous members who contributed to the budget with extra donations. Thus, in 1994, began the Amigos’ scholarship program for needy and promising young Portuguese musicians.
The Amigos de Música is an international group of around 120 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and also sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organisation which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2021.
Amigos de Música concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7pm. Gates open at 6pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. Entry donation including refreshments is €30 per person for guests and non-members, payable in advance by bank transfer (see www.amigosdemusica.org).
