Azores business leader gives 4-day week resounding thumbs down

President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Portugal’s Azores islands (CCIA), Mário Fortuna, has given the possible introduction of a four-day working week in the archipelago a resounding thumbs down, considering the very idea an “economic crime”. “Spreading companies out in patterns that don’t ensure competitiveness is, in our opinion, an economic crime, not least because it means putting an end to economic activities and this is equivalent to losing jobs and losing the general population,” he warned, in reference to a motion for a resolution – tabled by the Left Bloc’s sole member of the Azores Legislative Parliament, António Lima – which recommends the introduction of a pilot project in the region for a four-day working week both in the public and private sectors.
