Bacalhau boost: industrial fishing association delighted by news from Canada

The end of the ban on commercial cod fishing in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, imposed more than 30 years ago, is “good news” for Portugal, which has a large quota there, according to industry association ADAPI. “It’s good news for us because, in principle, it will reopen our share,” Luís Vicente, ADAPI secretary-general tells Lusa. It has been established that when fishing reopens Canada would have to grant a quota of about 5% to countries with a history of fishing in that region, which Portugal has. “The question now is whether we go there (to fish), whether we exchange (Portugal’s quota) with the Canadians, or something else. But of course, we’ll take advantage, either directly or indirectly,” said Vicente. The ban was imposed 32 years ago to allow local cod reserves to recover from ‘overfishing’.
