Baixo Alentejo Public Health Unit warns of hepatitis A outbreak in region

The Baixo Alentejo Public Health Unit (USP) has reported an outbreak of hepatitis A – originating in the Algarve, with six cases having been confirmed in the Bairro das Pedreiras neighbourhood in Beja. In a statement, the unit said that, as a measure to prevent and mitigate transmission, a community vaccination campaign was carried out in Bairro das Pedreiras from October 22 to 25: a total of 153 children up to the age of 18 were vaccinated, with actions undertaken to raise awareness and promote measures to prevent further transmission. According to reports, these measures appear to have worked: there have been no further cases reported in the last month (the first case having been flagged in September).
