Bank of Portugal governor to be called to parliament to explain sky-high salaries

Governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, could be ruing the day he ‘refused’ to continue paying the salary of one of his team requisitioned by the government. As a result, the extent of Bank of Portugal top brass salaries has been thrust into the public space, and people are horrified. Directors earn three times as much as the prime minister. Centeno’s salary alone is a whisker under €16,000 a month. CHEGA has requested an urgent hearing of Mr Centeno in parliament, and fellow MPs who usually revile CHEGA’s requests, have all agreed. As commentator José Gomes Ferreira admits, this is a ‘serious warning’ to Mário Centeno, because, when all is said and done, the entity that pays and sanctions his monthly pay packet is… the government.
