Beach Fair to pull thousands to VRSA

Event has been held since 1765

The centuries-old ‘Feira da Praia’ (Beach Fair) will return to Vila Real de Santo António this week, with organisers expecting thousands of visitors between Wednesday and Sunday (October 9-15).

The annual event will take place along the town’s riverfront avenue, Avenida da República, and the iconic Praça Marquês de Pombal, offering a wide variety of attractions for visitors of all ages. From thrilling rides and games to stalls selling clothes, household goods and traditional handicraft, there will be something for everyone. Food stalls will also be aplenty.

While the event attracts crowds of locals, it is particularly popular among Spanish visitors as October 12 is a national holiday in Spain, allowing them to cross the border and join in on the festivities.

The fair has a rich history that dates back to 1765, when it was first held on the sands of nearby Monte Gordo. In 1774, the year Vila Real de Santo António was officially founded, the event was moved to the city, where it took on a “new social and economic role”. Originally aimed at promoting the local fishing industry, the fair has since evolved into a major event that showcases the culture and spirit of the region.

The event will begin every day at 10am, closing at 1am on October 9, 10, 13, 14 and 15 and at 2am on October 11 and 12.
