Associação Madrugada is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and, to date, has supported 157 end-of-life patients, who prefer to spend their remaining days in their own home, and their loved ones. An incredible achievement for an organisation that has no government funding and relies solely on the generosity of others through volunteering and donations.
Their Support Centre in Luz offers counselling, therapeutic and creative activities, complementary therapies, advice and education.
One essential revenue stream is from the three retail shops in Lagos, Luz and Lagoa that sell ‘pre-loved’ items such as furniture, household accessories and clothing. The shop volunteers, who give their time freely, are led by a retail manager Judith Sullivan and they rely on the generosity of the community for donations.
One recent opportunity was presented when Cyril and Kristina Griffith decided to refurbish their home. Instead of throwing everything in the skip, they contacted Madrugada. It was an unusual package for the Madrugada team, as the items included windows, frames, shutters, doors, a solid wood front door, bathroom suites, air conditioning units and even a full kitchen…including the sink!
Judith took on the logistical challenge and the wonderful volunteer ‘movers and shakers’ then collected everything to be delivered to the Lagos Homestore.
The Madrugada team are grateful to Cyril and Kristina as, without their kindness, they would not have the financial support needed for its clinical team.
On behalf of patients and their loved ones, Madrugada would like to say thank you to everyone who donates.
