At the end of November, more than 700 elderly people were in hospital waiting for a place in a care home. The figures from the SNS executive board were revealed this morning by Público, and follow a perennial ‘pattern’, creating agonies for hospitals who ‘cannot let them go’ (as these people have no one to care for them), but equally have a list of people desperately waiting for surgical procedures. This year is no exception. “In order to deal with this situation, the government published an order at the end of last week that provides for the reinforcement of resources to guarantee the functioning of emergency rooms and hospitalisations”, says Lusa, but official sources have admitted that “certain surgeries” will have to be delayed if there is an increase in demand for hospital beds.
