Berry fruit producers in Mangualde, in the centre of Portugal, are thanking their lucky stars this year brought so much rain, but they aren’t prepared to see another year go by without a decision on the dam, promised years ago, which would ensure future drought years did not see them ‘high and dry’. Said mayor Marco Almeida, “the Girabolhos dam could definitively resolve this problem, and the truth is that we are always talking about it, hoping for it, but nothing ever gets done. It is important that we start looking at this region, and advancing definitively with the solution that we have ‘in our hands’”. Mangualde, like many other areas of Portugal, has a large amount of water intensive agriculture, involving greenhouse explorations.
