One of Castro Marim’s most popular Christmas attractions, a salt-filled nativity scene, is being put together and is expected to open to the public on December 1 at Casa do Sal.
The inauguration is scheduled for 4pm although it will be preceded by a Christmas parade at 3pm.
For 10 years now, a nativity scene has been created by the local parish council, but more recently the use of salt from Castro Marim’s salt pans has been a highlight as it helps to create a snowy landscape, making the attraction even more unique. In fact, the local council says that the number of visitors in recent years has “exceeded expectations”.
Over seven tons of the “best salt in the world” will be used in this year’s nativity scene, which will be 100sqm large and feature over 3,800 figures.
There will also be entertainment on the weekends, with storytelling for children on Saturdays and musical performances by local groups on Sundays as well as the sale of many local products like honey and dried fruits.
The nativity scene will be on display every day until January 6, from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, except on Christmas and New Year’s Day, when it can only be visited in the afternoon.
