The 15th Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival, held between October 3 and 6, once again transformed Sagres into the epicentre of biodiversity, welcoming enthusiasts from all over the world.

This year, the event was attended by around 1300 participants of 29 nationalities, reaffirming Sagres’ status as one of the best places for birdwatching and nature exploration in Portugal.

During the festival’s four days, participants had the opportunity to connect with nature through a varied programme that went far beyond traditional birdwatching sessions.

One hundred forty-six species were identified. The event’s biggest highlight was the sighting of the rare Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus), a migratory species that attracted particular attention among observers.

Furthermore, the activities showed a different side of the Algarve, which goes far beyond its beaches: walks, tours, lectures, and challenges designed for children, which guaranteed moments of learning and leisure for the whole family.

The event, organised by Vila do Bispo City Council in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and the Almargem Association, this year saw the involvement of 59 local partners, including accommodation, restaurants, entertainment companies, tourist attractions and other establishments in the region.

This cooperation demonstrated the positive impact that the festival has on the local community, promoting sustainable tourism and highlighting Sagres as a destination of choice for those seeking deeper contact with nature.

With an atmosphere celebrating biodiversity, the Bird Watching and Nature Activities Festival “is already a reference for ornithology lovers and everyone who wants to discover the best that the Algarve has to offer. And, once again, Sagres shone as a privileged venue for this celebration of wildlife”, points out the municipality of Vila do Bispo.
