IN THE second day of the Grand Champions tennis competition, crowd pleaser Bjorn Borg faltered and eventually conceded to Thomas Muster.
There were plenty of laughs as the pair played to the crowds and although Borg was the audience’s favourite, by the end, the Austrian had won their hearts as well as the match with a scoreline of 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Borg is due to face Brazilian Fernando Meligeni this evening (Thursday) at an altered time of 10.15pm.
Sergi Bruguera was victorious against Cèdric Pioline in another nail-biting match. Bruguera won the first set 6-4 but Pioline fought back in the second to win 6-1. The Champions Tie Break third set saw Pioline come out on top but it was not enough and Bruguera won 12-10 overall.
Pioline said: “I did not play well” and he hopes to improve his performance against Portuguese Nuno Marques from 5pm this evening. Bruguera is currently in a strong position to go through to the final but it hinges on his performance this evening against Michael Stich’s replacement in the tournament, Anders Jarryd, at 8.45pm.
A Champions Tie Break was also needed to settle the match against Jarryd and Marques last night. Jarryd came out on top with an overall score of 10-7.
Meanwhile, Andrés Gomez played Brazilian Fernando Meligeni in the first match of the day and the Ecuadorian came out victorious with yet another Champions Tie Break needed to decide the final score. After winning the first set 6-2, he lost 3-6 in the second but played a great tie break set, winning 10-3. Gomez faces Muster at 6.30pm this evening.
This evening’s line-up will also feature the juggling trick genius of Mansour Bahrami, who promises to provide great half-time entertainment, at 8pm.
