Borg is back!

UPDATED 10.45 AUGUST 8

FIVE TIMES Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg triumphed against the Equadorian Andres Gomez in the first match of the Vale do Lobo tennis tournament on Tuesday, August 7.

Having returned to Vale do Lobo for the first time since 2001, when he was beaten by Jeremy Bates, Borg, now 51-years-old, was aware of the challenge he would face against Andres Gomes.

However, Borg won through 6-7, 6-3, 10-8, after a champions tie-break set in the third set.

“I think it was a good game, but I need to play more to gain confidence. At the start of the match I didn’t know how I was physically, but by the second set I felt a lot better,” said Borg, adding: “I am very satisfied.”

Later the same afternoon, Brazilian Fernando Meligeni beat the Austrian Thomas Muster 6-3, 6-4.

In the game sponsored by the Caixa Geral de Depósitos bank, the French player Cédric Pioline beat the Swede Andre Jarryd 7-5, 1-6, 10-7.

The final match of the day saw Spaniard Sergui Bruguera beat Nuno Marques from Portugal in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
