British biker killed in road accident near Monchique

A 28-year-old British biker was killed last Friday in an accident in the Algarve.

Paul Raine was on holiday with friends when he decided to take part in the MadRon Hard Enduro, a GPS-based four-day off-road motorbike event.

He was not competing in the event when the fatal collision with a van occurred on the EN267 road in Marmelete near Monchique.

Event promotor Ian Robinson confirmed the tragic news in a Facebook tribute: “It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that we lost one of our enduro comrades today.

“Paul Raine, 28, has lost his life in what can only be described as tragic circumstances that no one could have foreseen or been able to prevent,” Robinson wrote.

Paul travelled out to Portugal for a trail riding holiday with friends, something Paul always wanted to do. He and one of his riding buddies decided to take part in the MadRon Hard Enduro Event for one day only before travelling back to the UK.

“It was whilst riding on the public highway that he was involved in a road traffic collision and sustained injuries he could not recover from.”

He added: “I have known him as an acquaintance for several years having spoken to him on many occasions at local enduro events and he can only be described as a very likeable person and we always had some laughs together about his enduro escapades.”

According to UK’s Daily Mail, a lap of honour will be held in his memory this Sunday at an offroad event in Catterick, North Yorkshire, Paul’s native county.
