Brits organise zipline crossing to raise money for Algarve firefighters

Event will take place in May

The British expat community in the Algarve is organising a fundraising event for the Portuguese volunteer firefighters through a zip line crossing between Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Spain) and Alcoutim (Portugal).

The crossing will take place on May 11 on the 720-metre zip line that crosses the River Guadiana and ends in Alcoutim, and which can reach a speed of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour.

The price of each ticket is €25, five of which will be donated to the Associação de Alerta de Incêndios Florestais (Forest Fire Alert Association) and volunteer firefighters in the Algarve, said Jan Felton, the British administrator of two Facebook groups, Women of Loulé and Algarve Women’s Network.

Quoted in a statement about the initiative, Felton said that she has “often heard of the volunteer firefighters”, but never realised, until now, “the full extent of their dedication and selflessness”.

It is truly incredible to know that over 90% of Portuguese firefighters are volunteers, demonstrating a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of their communities,” she said.

Those interested in taking part in this event are invited to express their interest by sending an email to info@womenofloule.com.

The Associação de Alerta de Incêndios Florestais is dedicated to providing information about the activity of firefighters and posting publications about the development of fires, in order to “help the community and the services”.
