Budget “should reduce 23% VAT on bottled gas”

António Comprido, secretary-general of Portuguese Fuel and Lubricant Companies (EPCOL, formerly known as APETRO) believes bottled (LPG) gas plays an important social role in places without access to the natural gas network and should, therefore, have a reduced VAT rate. ‘Bottled LPG is mainly used today in rural populations that don’t have access to the natural gas grid, it plays an extremely important social role in bringing portable energy to these people’s homes and energy, being an essential good, we all recognise, should be subject to a reduced VAT rate”, he told Lusa, on the sidelines of the conference ‘Supervision and Prevention in the Energy Sector’, organised by the National Entity for the Energy Sector (ENSE) in Lisbon yesterday. Bottled LPG is currently subject to the highest VAT rate of 23%.
